Biography: Lyudmila German was born in Ukraine, where she began her early musical training. She continued her education in New York, earning a BA from Brooklyn College and MM and DMA degrees from the Manhattan School of Music. German’s compositions include works for piano, organ, string quartet, voice, percussion, Japanese instruments, various chamber ensembles, electronics, orchestra, choir, incidental music and children’s pieces.

Recent performances include: incidental music for the play Clara Schumann: Confessions (2018, NYC, 2019, Finland); premiere of Three Rhapsodies for guitar solo by Junpei Ohtsubo in NYC and Tokyo, Japan (2019); premiere of Movement and Pastoral for ryūteki, clarinet and piano, commissioned by clarinetist Thomas Piercy (2019, The Barge, Brooklyn, NY).

German’s completed commissions (2020) include a septet for Fontenay Chamber Players; Three Shakespeare Sonnets for voice and Baroque organ for singer and organist Liya Petrides); a score for a silent film “N”, commissioned by Access Contemporary Music in Chicago, IL.

Lyudmila is a recipient of Meet the Composer Grant, Ivar Mikhaschoff Grant for New Music, Cantate Chamber Singers Award, and Robert Helps Prize.

She teaches music theory and composition at Stamford Music and Arts Academy (Stamford, CT); and is a music director and organist at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Georgetown, CT.
