MNSong: now a 2-year Mentorship with Libby Larsen

Source Song Festival presents MNSong, a two year intensive compositional study: Art Song seminars and workshops with composers Libby Larsen

WHEN

August 4-9, 2024 and August 3-8, 2025

ELIGIBILITY

There is no upper age restriction. All applications must be at least 18 years old as of May 1, 2024.

APPLICATION FEE

Applications are due March 9, 2024. There is NO application fee.

PROGRAM FEE

There will be a $500 program fee in the first year for those selected to participate, and $250 program fee in the second year, for a $750 total for two years.

APPLICATION SCORE REQUIREMENTS

Submitted works must be:

  • an original song or songs no more than 10 minutes;

  • written for single voice and keyboard;

  • set to a text written in English (applicants must provide proof of permission for use of all copyrighted texts not in Public Domain).

Application Materials:

  • Your work- video recordings for performers, and scores/recordings for composers

  • A 150-word biography

  • A one-page song cycle proposal and artistic statement

NOTIFICATION OF ACCEPTANCE

If accepted, notice of intent to attend and the first deposit will be due April 1, 2024 (50% of tuition for year one). Remaining balance due by May 12th, 2024 (remaining amount).

What Composers in the MNSong Program Receive:

Workshop includes:

  • Premiere song performance and recording with local performers in August 2024 during the festival week

  • Song-cycle premiere performance in Minneapolis, Minnesota, and professional recording in August 2025

  • Workshop, experimental situation with industry professionals

  • Collaboration, coaching, live performance and recording of your submitted work by local professionals (2024)

  • Two individual composition lessons per year with Libby Larsen and continuing mentorship checkpoints between festival appearances

  • Masterclass with Arlene Shrut on how to present your music and lectures on text-setting by Libby Larsen

  • Access to in-person festival masterclasses with MNDuo Faculty

  • Access to Online Resources, including:

    • A panel discussion on writing for the voice, featuring Libby Larsen, David Evan Thomas, Will Liverman & Susanne Mentzer

    • A panel discussion on writing for the piano, featuring Libby Larsen, David Evan Thomas, Lydia Brown, and Warren Jones
